Excellent discourse and rationale. Here in Australia we have a wonderful Federal Minister for the disabled, a "right-wing Labor (sic) unionist"-turned-MP, Bill Shorten. Under his guidance, our National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has reversed much of the impossibility for disabled people to receive much-needed help, from wheelchairs to carers. Minister Shorten has personally been involved with the disability sector even before he was an MP (14 years), but sadly he is leaving next year. He has wrought change and even though there are gaps in the system (for no system is perfect), the situation for disabled people has improved dramatically, with the provision of services hitherto difficult or impossible to access.

*Disclaimer: I have known Mr Shorten for 3 decades and even though he is more conservative than I am (even within the Labor Party), what he has done to what was a moribund, impenetrable system, is nigh-on miraculous! Obviously I wish him well in his next endeavour.
