Sport in Australia is god.
Sport in Australia is sacrosanct and above all else, including politics...until it isn't.
"Politics and sport should never mix" is the oft-repeated mantra, but constantly subverted by politicians who utter fealty to X team of choice, or a sportsman (yep, usually male) makes a political statement so gross or eye-wateringly stupid and vapid as to provoke comment and (usually) opprobrium.
Sportspeople in politics have generally failed spectacularly, due to lack of broader focus and a laser-like targetting of their chosen sport to the exclusion of the rest of life. There have been few exceptions, the vast majority of wannabes falling at the standing start.
I have no doubt Mr Rodgers fits the same pattern and as a politician will make a wonderful footballer.
