Well said! Years ago, departing Mexico City, we were told the plane had problems. After further delays and several hours, passengers were becoming restless, verging on violent, screaming at staff. I was sitting reading a book, as you are right, delays are better than a crash or worse. After listening to the cacophony for several minutes getting louder, I'd had enough. I stood on my seat and yelled for everyone to be silent (I have a very loud voice when necessary). To my astonishment, everyone shut up! I then said that as nobody here was an engineer, sit down & don't blame the terminal staff. They will get us some food & water & the plane will get fixed, as the alternatives were very bad. Anyway, people sat down and several harassed staffers came over to thank me. As it turned out, we had to stay overnight in a hotel, but at least a riot was averted.

I have no idea why people think louder and more abusive will make things get fixed faster. Common sense obviously is not common.
